Foster Update Nov. 2014:  It has been too cold for Delilah to stay outside.  She has made herself right at home.  While she gets along with all our dogs, not all of our dogs get along with her. She will make a great house dog as she likes to cuddle on the couch, she behaves very well in the house. Although, she and Huggie think it is OK to wrestle on the couch. She is still a puppy in that she wants to chew, so providing her with plenty of toys and chew things will keep her busy.  She does not want to be in the crate so you have to pick her up and put her in it.  She is fine after that.  She is very very smart!  Learns quickly.

Lilah is a Plott hound/pitt mix female about 1 1/2 years old (Plott hounds were bred to hunt wild boar and Pitts were bred to be nanny dogs to protect children). She's been spayed/ all vaccinations up to date and has no medical problems. She is in great shape and is very athletic and alert. She loves squeeky toys! She likes to sit on the porch glider and swing.

Delilah is very affectionate and bonds to humans easily. She has been taught to sit and come on command, walks well with a harness, and, when loose in the fenced area, does not range too far without checking in with her human. She is food motivated which helps with training, but is not food aggressive. Lilah has met all the dogs in her foster home; while no physical contact has yet been permitted with other dogs, she does not display any aggression towards other dogs when nose to nose at the fence. She is gentle with children. She is very clean and does not tear up her bed/pen area. She is a great watchdog!

All that said, Delilah MUST be treated with respect and gentleness. She is a powerful dog. If she starts to be too rough with her affections, a simple no command will make her stop - repetition is sometimes needed to make her calm down. She wants to be by your side as much as possible, and does express some separation anxiety when you first leave but calms down quickly. A large 6ft high fence with heavy gauge wire is required if she spends time outside alone. She will be socialized as an inside dog during her foster period, and introduced to other dogs and cats to gauge her reactions.

Delilah can be visited ANYTIME by prospective adopters by calling Steve East at 434-432-8445 for an appointment.
